A Marriage Prayer (a prayer for the weekend)
Dear God, You established marriage to bring welfare and happiness to your children, and only through You can we sustain it with joy.
You said, “It is not good to be alone.” There should be two so that one can always help the other. Our sadness will be lessened since the sorrow of one will be shared by the other, and our joys will be doubles since the happiness of one will be the happiness of the other.
Teach us gathered here together this weekend that marriage is not living only for each other buy joining hands to serve You in serving others.
Let us minimize each other’s weaknesses, be swift to praise and magnify each others strengths, and see each other always through a lover’s kind and patient eyes.
Make plans for our future, Lord, that will help us continue to develop as we walk together. Give us only enough tears to keep us tender, only enough hurts to us them humane, but enough success to make us certain that we walk with you.
May we never take each other’s love for granted but rejoice in experiencing that breathless wonder which exclaims, “Out of all this world, we chose each other!”
And in the sunset of our love, when life is over, may we be found as we are now, hand in hand, still thanking You for each other. May we serve You happily and faithfully until at last one shall lay the other in Your waiting arms, dear God.
